Whether you reside here or are visiting downtown, there are several meaningful ways to take part and reflect.

Key Ceremonies to Attend

  • The official ceremony at the BC Provincial Cenotaph near the Inner Harbour begins at 10:30 am and runs until around noon. The event is organized by the Victoria Poppy Fund Society and takes place along the waterfront at the Legislature grounds. Road closures will be in effect along Wharf, Humboldt, Government and Belleville Streets from 10 a.m. to noon.

  • In the municipality of Oak Bay, a wreath‑laying ceremony will commence at 10:55 am at the Oak Bay Cenotaph, followed by the two‑minute silence at 11 a.m.

  • At Royal Roads University in Colwood, a ceremony at Hatley Castle begins at 10:40 am, followed by a film screening and opera performance commemorating Indigenous veterans and broader military heritage.

What to Expect and How to Take Part

These ceremonies generally follow a respectful and solemn format, including the Last Post, a two-minute silence at 11 a.m., wreath-laying, and often songs or readings. Attendees are encouraged to wear the red poppy as a symbol of remembrance.

For visitors to the downtown area, the Inner Harbour service provides a deeply atmospheric setting, where you can watch the parade, join the crowd around the Cenotaph, and appreciate the historic precinct. Arrive early, allow time for road closures or alternative parking, and dress for the weather. If you prefer a quieter setting, the Oak Bay or Colwood events offer more local-scale options.

Why It Matters

Remembrance Day is more than a public holiday; it is a moment of collective reflection. As the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marks the armistice that ended First World War hostilities in 1918, Canadians pause to honour all who served in conflicts and peacekeeping missions.

By attending a service or simply stopping to observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m., you join in an act of remembrance that bridges generations and honours the ongoing cost of peace.

A Few Practical Tips

  • Arrive before 10:30 a.m., especially for the downtown Victoria event, as perimeter roads begin to close.

  • Wear something warm and waterproof, as November in Victoria can be chilly and damp.

  • Bring and wear a poppy if possible; they are widely available at various Legion branches, stores, and community outlets, helping to support our veterans.

  • Respect the solemn tone: silence mobile devices, remain standing during the two‑minute silence, and follow signs for seating or standing areas.

Joining a Remembrance Day event tomorrow is a respectful, meaningful way to engage with the community while honouring Canada’s military heritage. From downtown Victoria to the surrounding municipalities, there is something for everyone, whether you stay in the city for the full ceremony or quietly reflect at 11 a.m. wherever you are.
